The highest expression of Christ’s Lordship is not just personal but rooted in community.
For example, Paul only refers to Jesus once as “my Lord” …
But fifty-three times as “our Lord.”
The implications of this are profound.
It refutes two extremes so common today:
One is our prevailing institutional, mono-church model that centers around one man and his preaching – in violation of the New Testament’s many commands for how we are to gather as a functional community of believers.
The other is the “me and Jesus” crowd who, out of reaction to it, never make the effort to gather in actual relational community for the mutual building up of each other through ministry one to another out of the diverse gifts God distributes among us – as actually commanded in the New Testament.
Such distortions have created a huge number of believers who only know an individualistic faith …
Where Christ is merely “my Lord” rather than truly “our Lord.”
So should we stay trapped in our modern, unbiblical “mono-church” systems …
Or do the hard work needed to create truly Biblical community and gatherings – one with another?
Decades ago, I made my choice. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve never looked back.
“Our Lord” or merely “my Lord?”
Ultimately, it’s always our choice.
